2017-2018年Common App重大改革：學生可邀請校外升學顧問輔導

 　　Common Application，美國大學通用申請系統(tǒng)，簡稱CA，是美國本土及國際申請者一站式完成大學申請材料的公用申請平臺。申請美國本科，大部分學校需要通過 (通用申請)系統(tǒng)來完成申請。

　　CA作為一個平臺，意在簡化美國大學本科申請步驟，每年都會根據新的申請形式和趨勢做出適當的調整和改動。前不久，CA就公布了最新2017-2018年的申請文書題目，其中2題新增，3題修改，2題不變。

　　CommonApp 2017-2018年度最新文書題目變化

　　Common App表示，題目改變的目的是為了幫助申請者能通過這些題目找到共鳴，更好地分享自己的故事?？v觀這幾年的文書題目變化，有大改也有微調。有時可能是怕問得太虛無縹緲，申請者不好回答;有時可能是擔心學生寫跑偏了，所以做了限定;有時是想到了一個更新的角度去了解學生……不管怎樣，這都是為了讓招生官更多更好得了解申請人。

　　今年的題目具體有哪些變化?學生應該選什么題目動筆?本文給你詳細解讀一番。

　　【題目1】Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.(沒有變化)

　　有些學生有非同一般的背景、身份、興趣或才能，這是他們不可缺少的一部分。如果你也有同感，請分享你的故事。

　　解讀：這是了解申請者的入門題。“Identity”(身份)是個比較抽象的概念，很多學生拿到手之后并不知道如何理解，因此從2015年開始，添加了更加具體的“背景”“興趣”“才能”，幫助學生尋找選題。這是一個百搭題，沒有設定太多限制。很多學生都會選擇這個題目，但要寫出彩也不容易。如果文書立意不夠精細，很大幾率轉不住招生官的眼球，淪為申請中的分母。

　　【題目2】The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience? (微調)

　　我們從挫折中學到的經驗對之后的成功至關重要?；貞浤阋淮文忝鎸μ魬?zhàn)、阻礙或者失敗的經歷。它是如何影響你的，你從中學到了什么?

　　和去年的題目對比一下：

　　The lessons we take from failure can be fundamental to later success. Recount an incident or time when you experienced failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

　　解讀：去年的“failure”(失敗)，特別容易寫成一部悔過書。此次弱化表達為“obstacles we encounter”(我們所遇到過的挫折)。并且也把incident/time更具體為challenge(挑戰(zhàn)), setback(挫折), or failure(失敗)。仍然是一個CA常見的表達變化，沒有實質變化。

　　解題思路：招生官想從這道題看出你的性格特點，你面對挫折、失敗和挑戰(zhàn)是什么態(tài)度，采取了什么行動，并最終得到了哪些成長。因此，這道題的關鍵在于分析失敗原因且做出了一系列的改變，不要一味單純描述失敗。

　　【題目3】Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome? (微調)

　　回憶一次你質疑或挑戰(zhàn)某種觀念或想法的經歷。是什么啟發(fā)了你的思考呢? 結果如何?

　　2016-2017的題目是：

　　Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?

　　解讀：和去年的act相比，今年的thinking可能顯得簡單一點。但招生官還是看結果的(outcome)。

　　這道題是挑戰(zhàn)權威/成見，強調了學生的批判性思維能力，一般中國學生選得相對比較少。

　　如果你選這道題，需要注意critical thinking或者challenge a belief 不是代表你要全盤否定某個想法。世界不是非黑即白，很多學生在這道題目容易寫得極端，這是不可取的。招生官希望看到的是：你怎么去權衡兩個極端的。另外，忌寫一讀開頭就讓人想到結尾的文章。

　　【題目4】Describe a problem you've solved or a problem you'd like to solve. It can be an intellectual challenge, a research query, an ethical dilemma - anything that is of personal importance, no matter the scale. Explain its significance to you and what steps you took or could be taken to identify a solution.(無變化)

　　描述一個你解決過或者打算解決的問題。這個問題可以是學術方面的、研究調查或者是道德倫理方面的——任何你認為對你個人而言很重要的問題，不論大小。說明它對你的意義和你解決問題的方法。

　　解讀：這種sense of community近幾年來美國招生官非常地看中，看加州系統(tǒng)和新CAAS系統(tǒng)文書就知道了。每個都有一個題目是和community相關的。

　　這道題目招生官最想看到的是你們problem-detecting和problem solving的能力，非常適合工科類、不愛肆意抒情的學生選擇。這里大家很容易走入的誤區(qū)就是：This problem should be big, significant, probably saving the whole society. 答案是否定的。你們是高中生，他們不會expect you to be a perfect person( 無所不能的學生)，你這么厲害還來上什么大學呢?所以還是文書的原則，你必須以小見大。從小事兒出發(fā)。另外這道題目來講，建議大家可以思考的是我身邊有什么可以解決的問題呢?我可以為我的community帶來什么的。

　　【題目5】Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others. (微調)

　　描述讓你成長或者讓重新認識自己或他人的一個成就、事件、或者感悟。

　　對比一下2016-2017題目：

　　Discuss an accomplishment or event, formal or informal, that marked your transition from childhood to adulthood within your culture, community, or family.

　　解讀：題目把關鍵詞“adulthood”換成了一段解釋：sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.(激起了你的個人成長與對自己或他人的全新了解)，重點從個人成長(personal growth)，變?yōu)樽约夯蛘咚俗屇阌懈形虻氖虑?，范圍變寬。很多學生在寫的時候，很容易忽略自己的“ethnic” 特色。也就是自己的地域特色。我們完全可以從這點出發(fā)。選這個題目，反思是非常重要的，如果寫不出深刻的reflection,不建議選擇這個題目，不然只會寫出讓招生官覺得shallow的文章。

　　【題目6】Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more? (新增)

　　描述一個讓沉迷其中，甚至忘記時間的話題、想法、理念。它哪里吸引你? 當你試圖去了解更多的時候，你會求助于什么樣的幫助?

　　解讀：這道題招生官希望看到applicants的學習動力以及學習能力，考察他們如何利用身邊的資源來學習。這道題目適合有著強烈專業(yè)興趣的學生選擇。這可能跟“Why Major”系列撞車，目測寫的人不會特別多。

　　【題目7】Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you've already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design. (新增)

　　任選話題寫一篇短文。它可以一篇是你過去所寫的文章，文章題目不限，可以自創(chuàng)。

　　這道題目看似簡單，但是這7個里面最難的。因為如果你發(fā)現自己寫的東西和其它6道題目都有沾點邊兒，但是你選了7，會有種possibility讓人覺得你寫的東西很散。還不如選擇一個題目去寫。但是如果有著豐富的想象力，寫小說，寫詩的同學可以大膽地選擇這個題目。但是還是要和自己的counselor溝通，畢竟自己覺得有趣的小說和詩，只是主觀的想法，一定要和counselor或者peer溝通。

　　斯坦福錄取的學生寫的文書是怎樣的?

　　申請文書很重要。它是你展示個性和特質的媒介。 你是一個富有幽默感的數學天才，還是一個愛思考的，有著天馬行空想象力的寫作好手，都要通過個人申請文書來表現。題目出來了，構思寫好卻是一個艱難的過程。文如其人，好的文書往往能讓招生官看到的時候會心一笑，心里已經給這學生點贊了。下面我們就來看看斯坦福大學校報刊登的一篇文章，文章摘錄的是2012級新生在申請文書(個人陳述)中的第一句話，看完你就能明白為什么斯坦福要錄取他們了。

　　例一：Unlike many mathematicians, I live in an irrational world; I feel that my life is defined by a certain amount of irrationalities that bloom too frequently, such as my brief foray in front of 400 people without my pants.

　　翻譯：與很多數學家不同的是，我生活在一個非理性的世界里。我覺得我的生活是由一定量的，爆發(fā)過于頻繁的不合理因素構成的。比如說，我曾在400多個人面前，沒穿褲子，短暫的逗留了一會兒。

　　點評：這個學生明顯是要闡述自己在數學方面的興趣，但是在個性方面又顯得十分活躍，不同于其他數學天才的呆板。申請委員會肯定會印象深刻，有興趣接著往下讀，他沒穿褲子到底是怎么回事。

　　例二：Sitting cross-legged on the floor of a Bhimanagar slum dwelling in Bangalore, I ran my fingers across a fresh cut on my forehead.

　　翻譯：盤腿坐在印度班加羅爾市的一個貧民窟里，我用手指輕輕撫摸著額頭上一道剛剛刻下的傷痕。

　　點評：這篇申請的第一句話就表明這個申請者的人生經歷很不尋常，至少比一般的高中生豐富很多。同時，這第一句話還制造了一個懸念，讓人忍不住讀下去，看個究竟。

　　例三：When I was 8 years old, I shocked my family and a local archaeologist by discovering artifacts dating back almost 3,500 years.

　　翻譯：在我八歲的時候，我讓我的家人和當地的考古學家大吃一驚，因為我發(fā)現了距今有3500年歷史的文物。

　　點評：這個人應該是要申請人類學，歷史系或者考古系的專業(yè)。第一句話就在宣稱我在這個方面很牛。

　　例四：I had never seen anyone get so excited about mitochondria.

　　翻譯：我從沒有見過任何人對線粒體感到如此興奮。

　　點評：我查了字典，所謂線粒體(mitochondria)是細胞生物學的一個概念，我相信即使是一般的美國的大學教授(相關領域的除外)也得查一下字典才能認識這個單詞。短短10個英文單詞就表明了這個申請者是哪一方面的牛人，關鍵是這個人對這個領域還有很高的熱情。

　　例五：I have old hands.

　　翻譯：我有一雙蒼老的手。

　　點評：我和我的美國同事一致認為這個是最牛的第一句話。因為僅僅用了四個最簡單的英語單詞，就營造出了出其不意的效果。想象一下，申請者都是17，18歲的高中生，什么樣的人會有“一雙蒼老的手”呢?

　　例六：Flying over enemy territory, I took in Beirut's beautiful skyline and wondered if under different circumstances I would have hopped on a bus and come here for my vacation. Instead, I saw the city from the window of a helicopter, in military uniform, my face camouflaged, on my way to a special operation deep behind enemy lines.

　　翻譯：飛越敵占區(qū)的時候，我看著貝魯特美麗的天際線，心想是不是換一個環(huán)境，我會跳上一輛旅游巴士來到這里度假。實際情況是，我是透過直升飛機的舷窗來俯瞰這座城市，身著軍裝，臉上涂著迷彩，正深入地后方去執(zhí)行特殊任務。

　　點評：這個就像一部好萊塢大片的開頭部分，讓人不禁猜想這個申請者到底是什么樣的資歷，她/他到底經歷了什么?如果斯坦福錄取了這個人，是不是很有面子?

　　例七：Some fathers might disapprove of their children handling noxious chemicals in the garage.

　　翻譯：有些父親也許不會允許他們的孩子在車庫里擺弄有毒的化學品。

　　點評：這個人大概是要申請化學系，因為很明顯，她/他來自一個對化學很狂熱的家庭。

　　例八：I was paralyzed from the waist down. I would try to move my leg or even shift an ankle but I never got a response. This was the first time thoughts of death ever crossed my mind.

　　翻譯：我從腰部以下都癱瘓了。我努力想要動一下我的腿活著抬抬腳踝但是身體毫無反應。自殺的念頭在我腦海里閃過。

　　點評：注意，所有的表達都用的是過去時，說明這位申請者已經完全度過了這個階段，但是到底發(fā)生了什么，我相信錄取委員會的人一定會很關注的。

　　例九：As an Indian-American, I am forever bound to the hyphen.

　　翻譯：作為一個印度裔美國人，我這輩子都跟連字符脫不了關系。

　　點評：英語里Indian-American有一個連字符，這位申請者用這個符號巧妙地富有幽默感地來了一句，就像說相聲一樣抖了個包袱。

　　例十：I have been surfing Lake Michigan since I was 3 years old.

　　翻譯：我從三歲起就在密歇根湖上沖浪了。

　　點評：這個申請者明顯很有體育天賦，三歲起就在五大湖之一的密歇根湖上沖浪了。如果在體育方面有特長，拿過全國性的獎項，學習成績又十分優(yōu)秀，那么被斯坦福大學錄取就是輕易而舉的事情了。

　　例十一：On a hot Hollywood evening, I sat on a bike, sweltering in a winter coat and furry boots.

　　翻譯：在一個炎熱的好萊塢的夜晚，我坐在一輛自行車上，穿著一件冬天的大衣和毛茸茸的靴子，汗流浹背。

　　點評：一句話，就點明了時間，地點和人物，還充滿了矛盾沖突。這個開頭還是挺引人入勝的。

　　集知識性和趣味性于一體，非常具有可讀性。

　　選好素材，以小見大，用事實說話要遠遠勝過空喊口號。

　　4月10日Common Application申請系統(tǒng)又做了一些改革，增加了一些功能

　　和Google云盤整合

　　這一變化模仿的是CAAS申請系統(tǒng)的Locker功能。和Google云盤整合，學生將能上傳文件、簡歷、作業(yè)以及擁有申請的補充資料等。而且，在申請的時候，學生可直接調用存在谷歌云盤上的申請材料。美國很多高中學校都采用Google文檔和Google云盤，學生和教師能夠在有網絡的情況下創(chuàng)建和訪問共享文檔。這大大方面了美國高中老師和學生之間的協(xié)作。功能雖好，但國內還需要翻墻才能使用。

　　Google Drive Integration: Students will now be able to easily access and upload documents, resumes, and school assignments while completing the Common App and the college-specific sections of the application. We know that many school districts have adopted Google Docs and Google Drive to enable their students and teachers to create, collaborate, and access shared documents from any internet connected device. We also recognize that some students do not always have personal computers at home but use Google Drive on school or library computers to store their documents. We want to meet students where they are. By using the systems that they are already using, we are making the process more accessible for students.

　　學生可邀請校外升學顧問輔導

　　這是今年CA申請系統(tǒng)的一個重大變化，依然是基于CAAS聯盟申請系統(tǒng)功能模仿的。之前學生可以邀請在校升學顧問參與申請過程，而2017-2018年開始，通過CA系統(tǒng)遞交申請的學生，還可以邀請校外資源，比如校外的申請顧問、獨立咨詢顧問及社區(qū)組織(community-based organizations)輔導自己的申請。

　　CBO, Advising, and Recommender Enhancements: Students receiving support from advising and community-based organizations will be able to work with those counselors just as they work with their school-based counselors and teachers within the application. These individuals will then be able to manage their caseloads and view student progress within the Common App system. In addition, any student who wishes to do so will be able to share a view of their in-progress application with their school counselor, CBO counselor, or other advisor.

　　Courses & Grades

　　一些大學要求學生在申請過程中自行填寫課程和成績分數。CA新增Courses & Grades功能，意在將成績遞交流程精簡、標準化。通過Courses & Grades，申請人自己可以填寫高中課程和高中成績，而填好之后，CA會進行整合，從而方便了學生、顧問和學校這三方。這一功能目前還在測試中，將在2017年8月1日后正式啟用。

　　Courses & Grades: Many students are required to submit self-reported high school academic records when applying to some colleges and universities. With Courses & Grades, students will be able to fill out their self-reported transcript information as part of their Common Application. By integrating the Courses & Grades section into the Common App, those students who are already sending this information will be able to complete and submit it with their Common App, making the process of self-reporting transcripts more standardized and streamlined for students, counselors, and colleges.

　　Courses & Grades was developed from the feedback of member institutions, high school students, and counselors. The Common Application hosted a series of student and counselor focus groups with beta testing to determine how to make the self-reported transcript process accessible and efficient. Courses & Grades will launch in limited release on August 1, 2017.

　　西班牙語版

　　為了方便第一語言是西班牙語的學生申請，CA系統(tǒng)的主要信息會被翻譯成西班牙語，家長和其他家庭成員可以更好地了解大學錄取過程。

　　Spanish Language Resources: Key information for using the Common App will be translated so that students, parents, and other family members who speak Spanish as their first language can better understand the college admission process, including applying for financial aid and receiving virtual mentoring. This new tool will also benefit counselors who will be working with these families and will need Common App materials in Spanish.

　　另外，CA系統(tǒng)又加入了一些新成員校，目前總共有740所高校使用該申請系統(tǒng)。新增的成員校名單如下：
