美國大學ESSAY寫作：領會意圖，投其所好

 一般來說，許多國外大學會要求申請者遞交why this school (為什么申請本校)一類的申請essay，因此這類essay是申請者最需要掌握的，其重要性不容小覷。下面筆者以美國大學為例，談談如何才能寫好這類申請essay。

美國大學ESSAY寫作意圖

大多數(shù)美國大學讓申請者撰寫這類申請essay主要出于以下三個目的。

1. 判斷申請者意愿是否強烈

美國大學招生官希望通過閱讀這類申請essay來看看申請者為什么選擇在本校讀書，是對本校情有獨鐘、鐘愛有加，還是容易見異思遷、朝秦暮楚。其實，美國大學招生官清楚地知道，現(xiàn)在的申請者普遍會同時申請若干個大學。但對于申請者夢寐以求的大學，申請者必定會認真搜集這所大學的相關信息，下足工夫來寫。招生官通過閱讀申請essay自然就能做出初步判斷。

2. 希望申請者了解大學

美國大學招生官希望申請者能夠借此機會多了解該校方方面面的情況。一旦申請者被錄取，就可以迅速適應并融入大學校園生活，充分利用大學的各類資源，成為大學校園的活躍份子。

3. 了解申請者更多的情況

美國大學招生官還希望通過essay了解申請者更多的信息，比如考察申請者查閱資料進行分析研究的能力以及使用英文進行論述的能力，了解申請者期望大學對實現(xiàn)其個人及職業(yè)目標提供哪些幫助，考察申請者是否與大學互相匹配等，最終加深對彼此的了解。

美國大學ESSAY應對策略

了解了美國大學讓申請者寫作這類申請essay的意圖，接下來申請者要做的就是投其所好。申請者在申請essay中要表現(xiàn)出自己對所申請大學的濃厚興趣，同時還要體現(xiàn)自己對大學的了解和認識，并根據(jù)需要適當?shù)囟嗾故咀陨淼囊恍┝咙c。而要達到上述目的，申請者在動筆撰寫essay前要做好下面兩個基礎性工作。

1. 盡可能多了解自己準備申請的美國大學

申請者可以通過瀏覽大學官網(wǎng)、與在讀或畢業(yè)校友交流以及閱讀相關圖書或雜志等方式，搜集大學的相關信息，深入了解大學各方面的情況，做好基礎性工作。

2. 結合自身特點思考自己為什么要選擇這所大學

申請者可以從搜集到的相關信息中，篩查出大學吸引自己的獨特點，思考清楚這些獨特點對自己有哪些益處，從而激發(fā)自己到該大學就讀的強烈愿望。與此同時，申請者最好能夠思考一下自己可以為該大學做出哪些貢獻。

需要在此提醒大家的是，根據(jù)筆者經(jīng)驗，申請者在寫作這類essay時，容易把放之四海而皆準的理由列在文中，諸如大學綜合排名或專業(yè)排名很高、學術氣氛濃厚、國際學生較多、校園文化多元化、師生比例小等。這樣的申請essay很難給招生官留下好的印象，他們會覺得申請者沒有對學校進行細致深入的研究，沒有真正闡述自己選擇這所學校的理由，這所學校并非申請者的首選。

美國大學ESSAY寫作思路

其實，申請一所大學的理由可以有很多，只要用心去挖掘，總會讓自己的eassy寫的新穎獨特。下面我們通過三篇選校類essay范文來展示寫好這類essay的一些具體思路和技巧。

思路一：認同、欣賞大學獨特的辦學理念

每一所大學都有各自的辦學理念。對于招生官來說，招的學生一定要認同我們學校的辦學理念，否則一切都是空談。本著這個思路，申請者在寫作essay時就可以在這方面多下點工夫。下面我們來看一篇申請哥倫比亞大學的essay。

Essay Topic 1: Please tell us what you find most appealing about Columbia and why. (Columbia University, 200 words)

審題：題目要求申請者寫出哥倫比亞大學最吸引自己的一點，并解釋為什么。

范文1：Columbia University’s logo, the Crown, arouses my interest in the university. As I understand it, it is connected with the university’s original name: King’s College. Actually, just like a king, not only has the university continued to follow the tradition of liberal arts education, but it has changed over time to take the lead. I am sure that through two subjects of its core curriculum, Contemporary Civilization and Literature Humanities, I can learn more about the history and literature of mankind. What’s more these studies will help improve my critical thinking abilities and broaden my viewpoint as I prepare for further studies. As a supplement to the core curriculum, a new course–Frontiers of Science–is being offered this fall to remedy the previous neglect of science-related knowledge. I highly value this practice of being willing to change with time. 通過分析申請者的行文思路，我們不難看出申請者一定是對哥倫比亞大學進行了認真研究，才能將其歷史變革、學校特色陳述得有條有理。另外值得一提的是，申請者在寫作時巧妙地將“王冠”“國王”“學校特點”進行聯(lián)想和對比，層層遞進，從而點出學校吸引自己的地方。這一寫作技巧也值得大家學習，一來可以引起招生官的閱讀興趣，二來還可以說明自己對學校也是做足了功課，給招生官留下好的印象。

思路二：喜歡大學的氛圍

如果申請者去過這所大學，有親身的體驗，推薦使用思路二來寫作。近年來，越來越多的中學生利用寒暑假到美國參加美國大學舉辦的各類活動，學習寒暑假專門設置的課程，或是參加一些以參觀游覽為主的冬、夏令營，因而有更多的機會到一些美國大學去親身體驗一下。對于有此經(jīng)歷的申請者來說，在寫作選校類essay時，將自己的親身感受作為喜歡并選擇學校的理由，無疑很有說服力。下面我們來看一篇申請圣母大學的essay。

Essay Topic 2: Why are you interested in attending the University of Notre Dame? Your comments should not exceed 150 words. (Approximately 150 words)

審題：這道題的要求簡潔直白，需要學生回答“你為什么對入讀圣母大學感興趣?”字數(shù)要求大約150個單詞。

范文2：When I began planning for college, I hoped that I could study at a university that would be extremely challenging academically but would also provide a friendly environment. Using these criteria, Notre Dame (ND) quickly rose to the top of my list of preferred universities. On its website, its academic programs seemed to be very vigorous and varied. I think I can enrich myself in professional knowledge after studying there. This past summer vacation I had the chance to attend a summer school program at ND. Those lectures were simply fantastic, and I felt that people at ND treated each other like old friends. The atmosphere of the university seemed to be exactly what I want. As I have experienced the ND campus by myself, I know it is the closest to my ideal.

點評：在申請大學前，每個申請者都會有自己的擇校標準。本文中申請者就提到自己選擇大學的兩個標準：一是希望自己所就讀的大學在學術上具有競爭力(be extremely challenging academically)，二是希望能有一個友好的生活和學習環(huán)境(living in an friendly environment)。按照這兩條標準來衡量，再加上自己的校園親身體驗，圣母大學自然成為申請者最向往、最理想的大學(it is the closest to my ideal)。行文至此，想必招生官早已被申請者的熱忱所打動了。這種投其所好的行文思路也值得大家借鑒。

思路三：將大學吸引自己的多個方面結合起來

除了上述兩方面，申請一所大學的理由還有很多，下列三個方面就經(jīng)常被用作選校理由。

①學術幫助：申請就讀的大學、學院、專業(yè)課程設置很有特色，提供的輔助服務(如提供實習機會、與教授進行科研的機會、帶薪實習的機會等)能夠更好地幫助申請者進行專業(yè)學習，促進個人目標的實現(xiàn)。

②特長吻合：申請者某一方面的特長與學校在這方面提供的條件比較契合。例如，申請者喜歡制作機器人，而該大學有研究機器人的學生社團;申請者喜歡打籃球，而該大學擁有很棒的籃球隊等。

③環(huán)境有利：大學所處地理環(huán)境(如所在城市等)有利于自己的專業(yè)學習或職業(yè)發(fā)展(如該城市可為申請者提供較多的專業(yè)實習機會或者就業(yè)機會)，或是大學校園非常漂亮，當?shù)貧夂蜮?，自己非常喜歡等。

下面我們再來看一篇申請紐約大學的essay。

Essay Topic 3: Why NYU? (Characters available 1500)

審題：題目要求很簡單：為什么選紐約大學?長度不超過1500字。

范文3：New York University first stands out in my college list because of its emphasis on the arts and social studies. Its many famous alumni have made the university more attractive to me: a girl who has a deep love for art and design. Although I have won several awards in art competitions in recent years, I expect to enrich myself through the professional teaching at NYU to continue my pursuit of art, so that I can realize my dream of becoming a designer.

As NYU is situated in the heart of New York City, a dynamic and multicultural metropolis, there is no doubt that I can make the most of the resources that New York has offered. Wandering around museums, galleries and various art festivals will greatly enhance my appreciation for art and inspire my creativity. What’s more, it will be much easier for NYU students to find internship opportunities than students in other universities, and I am sure that these internships will help me apply my knowledge into practice, and I can get a real sense of real work environments.

綜上所述，在撰寫選校類申請essay之前，同學們一般要先想方設法收集學校的相關信息，然后根據(jù)各個大學的獨有特點，從上述的幾個理由或方面進行論證說明。在寫作過程中，一定要多思考，多用心，要讓招生官感受到你的強烈愿望和真情實感，這樣寫出來的essay才能贏得招生官的青睞。
